GRANT:
FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP
ADDRESSING
ISSUES OF DIVERSITY
Open
to all PSU Faculty and Staff
Application Deadline: December 3, 2004
Application Guidelines
PURPOSE
This award is a part of President Bernstine's PSU Diversity Initiative and,
as part of their work, is administered by The Diversity Action Council. In particular,
it furthers one of the Diversity Action Council's goals: To enhance the institutional
environment, curriculum, and faculty scholarship. Recipients are expected to
share their expertise and contribute to a body of literature as well as share
their findings on campus.
Projects that focus
on any area of diversity scholarship are welcome. For the 2004-2005 academic
year awards, special consideration will be given to scholarly projects addressing
issues related to the campus climate and the recruitment and retention of a
diverse faculty, staff, and student body at Portland State.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants are invited from all PSU faculty, staff, and departments.
THE AWARD
The amount of the award will vary, depending upon the nature of the research
proposed and the number of meritorious applications received. Selected proposals
will be funded, up to $2000 per proposal with a total of $8,000 devoted to these
awards.
THE APPLICATION
Applicants must submit a complete application including the following:
Project Summary: Applicants must include a non-technical abstract of the research or project (limited to 200 words or less).
Proposal (limited to five double-spaced pages): The proposal should include the following: the purpose and rationale for the project, the project design and timeframe, evidence of applicants' abilities to carry out the project, how the project's research is directly related to diversity, and how this work will contribute to a body of literature.
Budget: Award funds may be used to research materials, research assistants, or other purposes directly related to the scholarly activity. All funding must be in accordance with the new State of Oregon requirements and restrictions. According to the Oregon requirements, travel will only be funded for peer reviewed conference presentations. Budgets normally include personnel, services and supplies with narrative justifications for each item. Similarly, the activities and role of research assistants must be detailed and clearly justified in this section.
Broad ranges of items are intended to be funded. However, the following items will only be funded in exceptional circumstances and must be clearly justified as crucial for the execution of this research project: 1) Computer hardware; 2) Release time; 3) Summer salary.
Pending Support: Please state if you are requesting funding for this project from other sources. Be sure to specify the name of the granting agency, and the amount of the award.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE AND DEADLINES

by 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 3, 2004. Funding will be released early January
2005 and must be expended by June 30, 2005.
SELECTION PROCESS
A committee from the President's Diversity Action Council will choose all proposals.
Applications will be judged primarily on the soundness of the project and project
design; the feasibility of completing the project within the timeframe proposed;
the qualifications of the applicant(s); and the relationship to "diversity."

Action Council by the end of spring term 2005. Grant recipients will be expected
