Common Policies for the
Presidential Initiatives Action Councils

June 2004

Mission of the Action Councils
The President's action councils exist to forward the President's initiatives.   The central goals of those initiatives are established by the President.   Accordingly, the action councils are guided by the President's vision of how the initiatives are best advanced.

Action Council Membership
The action councils will be faculty driven and will rely on the academic expertise of the Portland State faculty, while including members of the wider Portland State community as the President deems appropriate.   Action council members are not representative of the units in which they reside, but instead represent a university-wide perspective on the important institutional issues that they work to forward.

The President will appoint an initiative leader to organize and guide each action council.   These leaders will receive guidance from and report directly to the President or the President's delegate with regard to all action council matters.   All action councils will receive staff support through the Center for Academic Excellence.

Appointed Members
Appointed members to the action councils will serve for a term of two years, renewable for one additional year with the approval of the President.   Previous members may be reappointed after a hiatus in membership of two years, or without such a hiatus, at the discretion of the President, to assure reasonable continuity in council membership.

Nominations and self-nominations for appointment to the councils are accepted from any member of the campus community and will be solicited yearly.   For each council, nominations will be collected by the initiative leader and forwarded to the President with the leader's recommendations.   The President will appoint the council members.

Ex Officio Members
The President may designate appropriate university officers to sit ex officio on one or more of the action councils.
