Within these options the student declares a major instrument for the course of the degree program. Advising is essential to students in meeting university-wide requirements, and also for understanding and completing the necessary departmental procedures. The goal of the department is to provide contact with both the area specialist and a general departmental advisor so that the student makes appropriate degree progress. We also encourage other university and departmental resources. The Department of Music is meeting this goal by: Appropriate advising at the outset of the program. The availability of some faculty beginning shortly after Labor Day would be a major help in dispelling negative impressions for incoming freshmen, and would provide early understanding of the departments complexities (reserving practice rooms, auditioning for ensembles, e.g.). Designated funding on a regular basis and cultural change at the department level are beginning to make this model effective. The Chair and Assistant Chair will take major roles in this early advising. Meeting with the Major Advisor during the first term. Because of the nature of music programs and the need to contact a major professor (the Applied Music Instructor) most students in our programs have access to a personal contact who may provide advising at the beginning of their academic career. The inequity exists for the many students who study with Adjunct Instructors. Students will meet with their assigned advisor (either the Applied Music Instructor, the Assistant Chair or the Chair) to determine the appropriate degree program, General Education requirements and other departmental procedures. Providing easy access to the Assistant Chair (who is designated as Departmental Advisor) through regular office hours. Contact with this key faculty member will solve most of the common student problems. Encouraging students to use other campus resources available to them. Providing career guidance. Areas of the department (brass, keyboard, opera, e.g.) are encouraged to provide occasional seminars for students in the area as a way of providing career counseling. Most areas of the department hold these sessions at least twice annually. DARS will be an important new tool for the advisor and student, and will be used by faculty to monitor degree progress. The department is making minor changes in the system before activation in June.
