"Student Advising" emerged as one of the primary institutional needs identified by faculty, staff and students in the 1999 Commission on Campus Climate and Life Report. From this report, the president identified "Student Advising" as one of three campus initiatives. With student advising as a campus wide initiative, the President appointed a Student Advising Action Council. This council supported the notion that PSU students should have a clear and simple means of accessing the information needed to plan and complete a successful university experience. This information should be accurate, consistent, up-to-date and easy to understand. Academic advising at PSU should meet student needs at all levels.

The senate recommended that the Student Advising Action Council evolve into the Student Advising Implementation Team (SAIT) comprising members from the original council as well as individuals from the senate. The Student Advising Implementation Team piloted the recommendations from the original model with four departments before moving to campus wide implementation. Each school or college has designed departmentally-based student advising plans in order to implement the student advising model in ways that meet their student and departmental needs.
